What is a Solar Assisted Heat Pump?

Solar Assisted Heat Pumps (SAHPs) combine a Ground Source Heat Pump with Solar Photovoltaic Thermal (PV-T). Collecting and extracting thermal energy from the sun and the ground to heat your home or business.

How does it work?

Different from Solar PV, Solar PV-T is designed to generate heat as well as electricity. This solar heat is then directed into the ground loop, pre-heating the ground collector making it more efficient and giving you a safe guard against a reduction in ground temperature. The ground collectors then operate in the same way as a GSHP, as the fluid in the pipes absorb the heat and then passes through the heat exchanger into the heat pump.

 Solar PV-T

Fluid passes back into the ground where it absorbs further thermal energy, repeating the process again

 Horizontal Loop Ground Collectors

Contains a mixture of water and antifreeze that absorbs the already warm ground thanks to the PV-T

 The Heatpump

Collects the warm antifreeze fluid and compresses it to increase the temperature before circulating it around your property.

 Cooled Ground Loop

Passes back into the ground where it absorbs further thermal energy, repeating the process all over again

Benefits of a SAHP:

  • Low carbon, environmentally friendly heating system with year round efficiency
  • Reduces your monthly energy bill
  • Suitable for buildings of all sizes whether it be residential or commercial
  • Works with a variety of heat distributions systems including underfloor heating, radiators and hot water
  • Requires minimal maintenance
  • Redeem government incentives for investing in a low carbon heating system

Government Incentives

A new government backed scheme, called The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is on offer to help with the initial cost of installing a Heat Pump. This is a voucher-based scheme providing people with an upfront grant up to £7,500 when investing in a Heat Pump. And what’s better is that this is an installer based scheme so we take care of everything for you!
