Contrary to popular belief, if you have Solar PV and a standard EV charger most of the energy to charge your car will still come from the grid and not from your PV array. This is because a standard EV charger will charge your car at a constant 7kW and it is very unlikely that - even on bright sunny days, the standard PV installation will have any more than 3kW spare to contribute to the 7 Kw total.The following products are designed to control the rate that the EV charges to make full use of any surplus energy from your Solar:
SolarEdge EV Charger
The SolarEdge EV Charging Single Phase Inverter allows you to charge your Electric Vehicle by utilising energy from the grid and redirecting the surplus energy from your PV system. The SolarEdge monitoring platform app allows you to track and manage your EV charging inverter from your phone. You can remotely decide when to charge your vehicle, when to schedule charging times depending on grid costs (for example, during off-peak hours so that the cost is less), and to track the status of your charging inverter.
Zappi EV Charger
The Zappi is another smart EV charger like the SolarEdge EV Charger above, in that it works to utilise the energy from the grid and your surplus PV energy. It is also managed on an easy to use Zappi app. The Zappi also has two other modes, giving you more control of how your vehicle is charged. The ‘fast’ mode will simply draw energy from where ever it can get it from to charge your vehicle as quickly as possible, most of which will be from the grid. Then the ‘Eco+’ mode solely uses the surplus PV energy, so you are able to charge your car for free!
